Baystate Health and Trinity Health Of New England have signed a definitive agreement that would transfer Mercy Medical Center and related entities in Massachusetts to Baystate Health, pending regulatory approval.
The Springfield, Massachusetts-based Mercy Medical Center, currently part of Trinity Health Of New England, would join the Baystate system along with its affiliated joint ventures and medical group operations. Until the transaction is finalized, both organizations will continue to operate independently.
Trinity Health Of New England will retain ownership of several services in the region, including Brightside for Families and Children, Mercy LIFE, Beaven Kelly Home and Saint Luke’s Home.

The agreement comes as hospitals across the country face ongoing financial and operational pressures. According to the organizations, Mercy has encountered challenges tied to reimbursement levels, workforce shortages and a shift toward outpatient care, raising concerns about long-term sustainability.
Peter D. Banko, president and CEO of Baystate Health, said the move is intended to maintain local access to care. “Today, access forces too many patients to leave the region to seek care, and we need to ensure that care is compassionate, high quality, affordable, and local,” he said.
Montez Carter, president and CEO of Trinity Health Of New England, said the decision followed a review of potential partnerships. “Our decision to transition Mercy to Baystate Health reflects our shared aim of ensuring that patients continue to have access to high-quality care,” he said.
Mercy Medical Center is a 182-bed acute care hospital in Springfield, with additional services including a rehabilitation hospital and a cancer center. Baystate Health, also based in Springfield, operates an integrated system that serves more than 800,000 people across western New England.
The organizations said the transition is intended to support continued access to hospital services in western Massachusetts, with additional details to be released as the regulatory review process moves forward.
