El Camino Health seeks approval for $1 billion Los Gatos hospital replacement

por Gus Iversen, Editor in Chief | June 24, 2026
El Camino Health has submitted plans to the Town of Los Gatos in California to replace its existing Los Gatos hospital with a new acute care campus designed to meet updated seismic requirements and support expanded clinical services.

The Mountain View, California-based health system said the proposed project would replace the current hospital, which opened in 1962, with a 340,000-square-foot facility adjacent to the existing campus. The new hospital would include 122 private patient rooms, 12 operating rooms, an expanded emergency department and updated maternity, cardiac and oncology services.

According to El Camino Health, the project is expected to cost more than $1 billion and is targeted for completion in 2032. The existing hospital would remain operational throughout construction.

The health system said the new campus is planned as an all-electric facility and is being designed to comply with current California seismic standards. Additional features include a healing garden, water-efficient landscaping and a goal of achieving LEED Gold certification.

El Camino Health acquired the former Community Hospital of Los Gatos in 2009. Since then, the organization said it has invested more than $300 million in renovations and clinical programs at the site, along with $1.4 million in community grants.

“This is an important milestone in our commitment to meet the expanding healthcare needs of Los Gatos, Campbell and surrounding communities,” said Dan Woods, CEO of El Camino Health.

The health system cited aging infrastructure and state seismic requirements as key factors driving the replacement project. It also said the new facility is intended to accommodate newer medical technologies and changing care delivery needs.

“This rebuild represents the next chapter of El Camino Health’s commitment to combining personal, community-focused medicine with clinical innovations and medical excellence,” said Alan Muster, MD, president of El Camino Health Medical Network.

El Camino Health operates two acute care hospitals and 28 physician offices across Silicon Valley and the South Bay. In addition to the Los Gatos project, the organization said it is pursuing broader expansion efforts that include new ambulatory facilities and investments in primary and specialty care locations.
