Medical Outfitters, a Miami-based distributor and service provider of imaging equipment, has obtained ISO 13485:2016 certification, the international quality management standard for organizations involved in the medical device life cycle.

The certification, which applies to companies engaged in the distribution, installation, maintenance and support of medical devices, requires documented quality management systems, risk controls and traceable operational processes designed to support regulatory compliance and patient safety.

Founded in 2010, Medical Outfitters initially focused on the resale of imaging systems and related technical services for healthcare providers. The company has since expanded into a multimodality imaging solutions provider, working with manufacturers including Fujifilm, Carestream, Planmed, Esaote, DMS, Mammotome, Konica and Koning Healthcare.

"For us, ISO 13485 is not simply a credential, it formalizes a culture that was already present within the company: rigorous quality control, well-defined processes, and a deep sense of responsibility to the healthcare providers and patients who ultimately rely on the equipment we support," Miguel Machuca, president of Medical Outfitters, told HCB News. "We take great pride in delivering products and services that meet the highest standards in the market."

Medical Outfitters distributes equipment in the U.S. and Puerto Rico and maintains an international presence across 26 countries in the Caribbean. Its regional operations include a Caribbean base in Trinidad, field service engineers located in Barbados, Belize and Antigua, and a Puerto Rico office that supports service coverage for Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and St. Croix. The company has also established sales and service operations in the Dominican Republic, which it expects will serve as a central hub for regional activities.

Beyond equipment distribution, Medical Outfitters operates specialized divisions, including a mobile imaging equipment unit, a parts business and a cryogenic service department.

According to the company, quality management processes had already been integrated into its operations prior to pursuing certification, allowing the audit and approval process to be completed in roughly seven months. The certification formalizes those procedures as the company continues expanding service and distribution operations across North America and the Caribbean.
