Connecticut Children’s has opened an eight-story clinical tower at its Hartford campus, marking the most significant expansion in the health system’s history.
The $326 million project adds a range of pediatric care services and infrastructure upgrades, including a private-room neonatal intensive care unit, a fetal care center, and spaces designed with sensory-sensitive features. The building also includes family-focused amenities such as new dining areas, a gift shop, and outdoor terraces.
Hospital leadership, elected officials, donors, and community members gathered December 4 for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and guided tour. Connecticut Children’s president and CEO Jim Shmerling said the tower represents more than new clinical space.

“Every inch of this space was designed for kids and the families who love them,” Shmerling said during the event. “You have built far more than a tower. You have built a promise that will carry our health system and the care we provide beyond imagination.”
The expansion follows two and a half years of construction and planning, incorporating input from families, clinicians, and staff. Notable features include real-time safety technology, a “car-to-care” patient arrival experience, and sustainable design elements such as donor walls built from trees previously located on the hospital’s lawn.
Executive vice president and COO Bob Duncan said the building blends “thoughtful design, operational excellence, and compassionate care,” and will allow the organization to increase access to pediatric services across the region.
Governor Ned Lamont and Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam both spoke at the ceremony, highlighting the facility’s role in expanding care access and deepening ties with the community. The tower’s opening also featured remarks from families who have received care at the hospital.
Connecticut Children’s operates more than 30 care locations across Connecticut, eastern New York, and western Massachusetts. It remains the state’s only independent pediatric health system.
