Tampa General Hospital has acquired a 53-acre parcel in Citrus Hills, expanding its TGH North footprint and signaling long-term plans to build new healthcare infrastructure in Citrus County.

The property sits next to the TGH Crystal River Emergency Center on Norvell Bryant Highway, a freestanding ER facility that opened in late 2023.

The Tampa-based academic health system intends to use the site for a future hospital, medical office building, central energy plant, and helipad. While construction timelines have not yet been disclosed, Tampa General said the acquisition is part of a broader effort to meet the needs of a growing population in the region.

“This new property is another opportunity to leverage the full power and scale of Tampa General’s network,” said Steve Short, executive vice president of strategic growth. “We’re excited about the potential this expansion has to transform care for the burgeoning Citrus Hills community.”

The acquisition adds to the TGH North network, which includes facilities in Hernando and Citrus counties. Tampa General entered the area in 2023 through the acquisition of the Bravera Health system. Since then, the organization has broadened its local service offerings, including expanded cardiac, oncology, and neonatal care.

TGH North now comprises three hospitals, one freestanding emergency room, two ambulatory surgery centers, and 10 primary and specialty clinics.

Stacey Brandt, who became market president for TGH North in September, said the health system is focused on aligning future development with community needs. “We look forward to engaging with community leaders and our patients to understand how we can best leverage this latest expansion,” said Brandt, who also serves as executive vice president and chief administrative officer.

No specific project timeline or construction details have been released.
