Mercyhealth has entered into an agreement to affiliate with Freeport, Illinois-based FHN, a move that will bring the longtime independent health system into a larger regional network.
Leaders from both organizations announced the agreement at a press conference on September 30.
The affiliation is expected to strengthen FHN’s operations by leveraging Mercyhealth’s broader infrastructure and clinical resources. According to FHN president and CEO Mark Gridley, the agreement is a proactive step toward securing sustainable care for rural communities.

“By joining forces with Mercyhealth, we are taking an active step to preserve and strengthen care for our patients,” Gridley said. “In Mercyhealth we have found an organization that shares our strong history of providing care in rural communities and can also provide our patients with greater access to Mercyhealth's advanced clinical expertise and specialty care centers.”
FHN, which has served northwest Illinois for over a century, cited ongoing financial pressures as a key factor behind the decision. Fewer than a quarter of U.S. hospitals remain independent, with consolidation accelerating nationwide amid economic strain and rising care costs.
Mercyhealth, headquartered in Rockford, Illinois, will invest $100 million into the FHN system over the next five years. Planned capital projects include a new linear accelerator for the Leonard C. Ferguson Cancer Center at FHN Memorial Hospital and the addition of a robotic surgical system. The funding will also support facility upgrades and expanded service offerings.
Mercyhealth president and CEO Javon Bea noted the challenges faced by independent hospitals nationwide. “He kept the facility operating independently in a tough economic environment where more than 750 hospitals nationwide are at risk of closing, including 16 in Illinois,” Bea said of Gridley.
Pending regulatory approval, the transaction is expected to close by the end of the year. Following the affiliation, the system will operate under the name Mercyhealth FHN.
