GE HealthCare is expanding its clinical engineering services relationship with Carilion Clinic, adding asset management and real-time equipment tracking tools across the Virginia health system.

The Chicago-based medical technology company said Carilion will deploy GE HealthCare’s Advanced Asset Management Program (AAMP) and Encompass real-time location system (RTLS). The technologies are intended to improve visibility into mobile medical equipment and support equipment management across the health system.

According to the companies, the expanded agreement is designed to help ensure medical devices are available when needed for patient care. Carilion also expects the initiative to improve operational efficiency and reduce variation in equipment management processes.

“Having access to the right equipment at the right time is critical to supporting our clinicians and delivering the highest quality care to our patients,” said Keith Perry, senior vice president and chief information officer for Carilion. “We look forward to building on this collaboration to advance applications of new technology to innovate and enhance the patient experience.”

GE HealthCare’s AAMP focuses on managing medical equipment throughout its life cycle, including planning, deployment and ongoing support. The company said the program is intended to help clinical and operational teams make decisions about equipment utilization while reducing workflow challenges.

The agreement also expands use of GE HealthCare’s Encompass platform, a web-based RTLS that tracks mobile medical equipment. The system provides location data intended to help staff find equipment more quickly and monitor its use across facilities.

Carilion plans to extend the technology to multiple locations, including Roanoke Memorial Hospital’s Crystal Spring Tower. The facility houses Carilion’s Cardiovascular Institute, a Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center, and an expanded emergency department.

“At GE HealthCare, patient care is at the center of everything we do,” said Rachel Gilbreath, U.S. East Region president, GE HealthCare. “Our long-standing collaboration with Carilion Clinic reflects a shared commitment to creating a consistent, efficient experience for patients and caregivers across all of their facilities.”

The announcement marks the latest expansion of an existing partnership between the two organizations focused on equipment management and operational support across Carilion’s network.
