Instrumentum has expanded its national sterilization network with the acquisitions of Sterile Processing Express (SPDx) and Sterile Processing Services of America (SPSA), bringing its total footprint to five facilities across four states.

The Boca Raton, Florida-based company aims to support hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) as they face growing surgical volume and mounting infrastructure constraints.

SPDx is headquartered in Phoenix, while SPSA operates sterilization facilities in Long Beach and Modesto, California. The newly acquired operations will enhance Instrumentum’s ability to meet demand for outsourced sterile processing services, particularly as providers struggle with limited internal capacity, aging equipment and staffing shortages.

Instrumentum positions its services as a capital-light alternative to in-house sterile processing departments (SPDs), offering logistics and sterilization support that enables providers to manage higher surgical throughput without investing in new infrastructure.

“We are thrilled to have SPDx and SPSA join the Instrumentum team as we expand our commitment to quality, precision, and patient safety,” said Dan Johnson, CEO of Instrumentum.

The company has stated that its model improves instrument utilization rates and tracking, with reported outcomes two to three times better than typical industry benchmarks. Its growth strategy includes a collaborative approach with healthcare providers and medical device manufacturers.

“Instrumentum is redefining the entire surgical landscape,” said Jeff Eardley, chief commercial officer at SPDx. “We share Instrumentum’s vision and business model, bringing healthcare providers and surgical instrument manufacturers together as partners.”

The company markets its services under a Sterilization-as-a-Service model, which it says helps streamline logistics, reduce instrument downtime and improve overall OR efficiency.

“Combining superior logistics with best-in-class sterilization processes, Instrumentum offers a transformative solution to an overlooked but critical process in healthcare,” said Pete Durand, president of Instrumentum.
