Ascension has signed an agreement to acquire AMSURG, a move that will significantly grow the health system’s footprint in outpatient surgical care, adding more than 250 ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) across 34 states once the deal is finalized.
The St. Louis, Missouri-based health system said the deal aligns with its strategy to shift more services toward community-based, lower-cost care settings. AMSURG centers specialize in procedures including gastroenterology, ophthalmology and orthopedics; areas in which demand for outpatient care has been steadily rising.
Ascension CEO Joe Impicciche said, “This acquisition is deeply aligned with Ascension’s Mission to provide compassionate, personalized care to all, especially those most in need.”

Nashville-based AMSURG has operated ASCs for over three decades and is known for its joint venture model with physician partners. That model is expected to continue under Ascension, with the health system stating it will maintain physician-led governance at the centers.
Eduardo Conrado, president of Ascension, said the acquisition is a response to the broader shift in U.S. healthcare from inpatient to outpatient care. “We are investing in a platform to support independent physician groups and healthcare systems alike,” Conrado said, adding that the aim is to provide care in “convenient, trusted and community-based environments.”
AMSURG CEO Jeff Snodgrass said joining Ascension would help advance a shared commitment to clinical excellence and local physician leadership. “Our partnership with Ascension builds on a shared commitment to clinical excellence, compassionate care, and local physician leadership,” Snodgrass said.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Jefferies LLC served as the exclusive financial advisor to Ascension. Goldman Sachs & Co. LLC and Ducera Partners LLC advised AMSURG.
Integration plans will focus on maintaining care quality and operational performance, according to both organizations.
