Canon Medical introduced a new spectral CT system that employs deep learning for image reconstruction at this year’s RSNA annual meeting.
The Aquilion ONE / PRISM Edition will utilize artificial intelligence with the 510(k)-pending Advanced intelligent Clear IQ Engine (AiCE) with Deep Learning Spectral Imaging capabilities.
The technology, trained on high-quality image data, is designed to boost signal and create optimized images with what the company says is a more natural texture.

While spectral imaging has existed for several years, it’s recently started to gain ground in the CT market, for use in cancer detection and cardiovascular applications.
“When you really ask customers that have spectral from other solutions, how many of them are really using it? Very few of them,” Dhruv Mehta, senior manager of solutions marketing at Canon Medical, told HCB News. “What we did at Canon is we took a very different approach, and we’ve used artificial intelligence to be able to come to market with a spectral solution that customers can use routinely.”
With prior spectral CT solutions, there was a trade-off in image quality, dose or workflow, Mehta said.
“With the Aquilion ONE / PRISM Edition, you have none of those trade-offs,” he added. “Every single acquisition could be a spectral acquisition. You still get all of the image quality capabilities, all of the dose management capabilities, and its seamlessly integrated into the workflow.”
The system also comes with a touch screen tablet user interface, which Mehta said that can be used for “single-handed interventional capability.”
At RSNA the company also announced that it is integrating its AiCE technology across its portfolio of scanners.
AiCE is currently cleared on the Aquilion ONE / GENESIS Edition and Aquilion Precision CT systems, and is pending 510(k) clearance on the Aquilion Prime SP CT systems and the Vantage Galan 3T and Vantage Orian 1.5T MR systems, in addition to the Aquilion ONE / PRISM Edition.
