Samsung Electronics America Inc. announced on Monday the U.S. commercial release of a new U-Arm-based DR system. It's the second DR system release from Samsung this month.

The new system, called the XGEO GU60A, is being marketed as a compact and versatile system for use in environments where space might be limited. The U-Arm, which is a maneuverable arm that allows the operator to scan various parts of the patient, is key for tight spaces.

"The Samsung XGEO GU60A offers a perfect balance of performance, flexibility and space-saving," said Doug Ryan, group vice president for Samsung's Health and Medical Equipment unit, in a statement.
The system uses Samsung's Adaptive Local Contrast Stretching (ALCOS) software with customizable post-image processing for optimizing contrast and edge sharpness that the company said enhances image quality. In addition, the U-Arm can be rotated from +120 degrees to -30 degrees.

On Nov. 5, Samsung unveiled the XGEO GC80, the company's first digital radiology system, and its entrance into the DR market.

Samsung has been working on becoming a major player in the medical equipment space with diagnostic imaging product releases as well as major acquisitions, including NeuroLogica Corp., a company best known for its mobile CT scanners.
