Fujifilm SonoSite announced yesterday that it received FDA clearance and CE mark for its new mountable ultrasound system, the SonoSite SII. The system is designed for regional anesthesia, vascular access and trauma applications.

SonoSite first introduced a mountable ultrasound system to the market in 2007 and the SII ultrasound expands on the design of the original. Brian Noyes, VP of global marketing at Fujifilm SonoSite, told HCB News that this latest generation system was developed through hours of listening to clinician feedback — both in-house and in hospitals — to create a solution that would meet their needs.

"The SonoSite SII features a newly designed user interface that adapts to the imaging state, and brings the controls that are needed to the forefront," said Noyes. "When you are scanning, you will see controls that are relevant to scanning. When you are in the frozen state, you will see controls related to measurements and calculations."

For regional anesthesiology applications, the SII features a new touchscreen user interface that automatically adjusts to the use case. It includes an embedded dual transducer connector that enables clinicians to quickly switch between transducers by tapping the screen twice.

The system also comes with a new stand that offers elevated transducer holders and additional storage. It has a tray with a lockable drawer, larger storage baskets and a dedicated location for a gel bottle, so that everything the clinician needs during the exam is easily accessible.

Speed and the ease of image acquisition are very important when it comes to trauma applications. The SII features DirectClear technology, which elevates transducer performance by increasing penetration and contrast resolution.

"Clinicians wanted a system to drive better overall efficiency — whether it be less button presses on the system or more utility in the stand," said Noyes.
