CEDAR PARK, Texas – August 31, 2023 – ETS-Lindgren announced participation in two industry workshops that will take place in The Netherlands and in Germany on September 12 and 13, 2023, respectively. These workshops will feature invited speaker Zhong Chen, Chief Engineer with ETS-Lindgren, who serves as Vice-Chair of the American National Standards Committee C63, addressing electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test and measurement techniques. Mr. Chen will present “Recent Advances in EMC Test Site Evaluation Using Advanced Antenna Measurement Techniques.” As part of the background for this presentation, Mr. Chen advised, “Calibrating antennas and validating test sites are interdependent processes, as they both mandate accurate antenna measurements in their testing environments. Site VSWR, as specified in the CISPR 16-1-4 and C63.25 standards, is used as the figure of merit to qualify test site performance from 1 GHz to 18 GHz. In the CISPR method, the standing wave is measured by sampling scalar fields along several linear paths. However, to simplify the measurement, test data are severely undersampled.”

The presentation reviews the background that Time Domain SVSWR, as specified in C63.25.1 (1 GHz to 18 GHz), was developed to address the undersampling issues. For above 18 GHz tests, new challenges emerge, such as the need to test more locations in the quiet zone and to measure the receive antenna beam coverage. Cylindrical mode filtered SVSWR developed as a result of this new challenge, which is now under active consideration in the C63.25.3 (18 GHz to 40 GHz) and CISPR 16 standards. “Participants of this presentation will gain a deeper understanding on the technical background of the evolution of the test methods, and how advanced antenna measurement techniques are used to help to solve different technical challenges. Following the presentation, I will share a video showing how to perform the cylindrical mode filtered SVSWR measurement in a 3 m semi-anechoic chamber,” he added.

Mr. Chen will give this timely presentation as part of a half-day workshop at Kiwa in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, on Tuesday, September 12, from 09:00 to 13:45, and at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig, Germany, on Wednesday, September 13, from 12:30 to 16:45.

The technical program in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, “Advances in EMC and Wireless Measurements: Half-Day Technical Workshop with Standards Updates,” will highlight additional invited speakers, including Dennis Lewis with The Boeing Company, Seattle, Washington; Professor Davy Pissoort with KU Leuven University, Bruges Campus, Belgium; and Bart Scholten with Kiwa, Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. A complimentary lunch hosted by Kiwa, ETS-Lindgren, Accelonix, and the IEEE EMC Society Benelux Chapter will be furnished, along with a technical tour of Kiwa’s EMC Lab which features a 5 m semi- anechoic chamber. Kiwa provides testing, certification, and global market access regarding radio, wireless, and electrical equipment.
