Result of multi-year collaboration
ARUP Laboratories and Applied Spectral Imaging announced the launch of the PathFusion pathology imaging suite on Monday.

This was the result of a multi-year collaboration that started in November 2016, to standardize image analysis for digital pathology workflows.

PathFusion provides computer-assisted diagnosis for easy fluorescent in situ hybridization validation. To do that, it combines whole-slide imaging, tissue FISH analysis and digital tissue-matching of FISH with Brightfield samples.

Hematoxylin and Eosin slides are scanned, the pathologist logs in remotely and marks the regions of interest on-screen, and then the system automatically matches those regions to the same exact cells on the FISH slide.

PathFusion uses proprietary computer-vision algorithms to perform the FISH analysis. The final results are then presented to the pathologists in a single intuitive view that includes the H&E, immunohistochemistry and FISH slides.

In order to develop this system, ARUP contributed its deep clinical knowledge and workflow experience and ASI provided its imaging and analysis expertise. The companies have gone through a rigorous process to validate the system and prove that it's on par with conventional microscopy.

PathFusion was first unveiled at the College of American Pathologists annual meeting in early October, along with the HiPath Pro Brightfield imaging and analysis system.
