An unnamed health system operating hospitals across five East Coast regions will implement Fujifilm’s Synapse Pathology platform on Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) cloud infrastructure to digitize its pathology operations and reduce diagnostic turnaround times.

The Lexington, Massachusetts-based Fujifilm Healthcare Americas Corporation said the project will mark the first fully cloud-based Synapse Pathology deployment in North America. The rollout will extend to all five sites in the health system, combining on-premises components with scalable AWS resources to handle daily case loads and future growth.

Synapse Pathology functions as a digital pathology PACS, allowing anatomic pathology teams to view and manage high-resolution slide images in a cloud environment. The system will integrate with the health system’s Epic Beaker laboratory information system, enabling case synchronization, status updates, and accessioning within the Epic interface. Fujifilm says this approach aims to minimize workflow disruption for pathologists, laboratory technologists, and clinicians.

Mark Lloyd, vice president of digital pathology at Fujifilm Healthcare Americas, said the initiative reflects a broader movement among large health systems to adopt enterprise-level, cloud-hosted platforms that support multisite collaboration in diagnosis and treatment.

Dan Sheeran, AWS general manager for healthcare and life sciences, said the deployment is designed to help support the diagnosis and care of more than 1.3 million patients.

The companies have not disclosed financial terms of the agreement.
