Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. has launched two new ultrasound systems: Aplio 300 and 510(k)-cleared Aplio 500, at Chicago's Radiological Society of North America meeting.

"Aplio 300 and Aplio 500 are really going to allow clinicians the ability to better diagnose, treat and intervene earlier on," said Nancy Plambeck, senior manager of Toshiba's strategic development ultrasound business unit.

With an aim to provide more accurate diagnoses and better patient throughput, Aplio 300 comes standard with Differential Tissue Harmonics, enabling uniformity in the near and far fields; iStyle + Productivity Suite; and a high-resolution LCD screen on a four-axis arm and handle, adjustable console, lighter weight and smaller footprint. The system's small, versatile platform is designed for all routine ultrasound exams, including radiology, OB/GYN and cardiac.

"Both systems have picture-perfect image quality and utilize the technology to give us better frame rates and higher dynamic range," said Plambeck. "Aplio 300 is built for the bread-and-butter every day user; while Aplio 500 is built off the same technology, but with advanced features."

Aplio 500's enhancements include Fly Thru, which utilizes 3D/4D volume rendering to "fly through" ducts and vessels from the inside-out to explore lesions and masses, and assist in planning interventional procedures; and Smart Fusion, which presents CT and ultrasound images side-by-side on a single screen, fusing images and eliminating the need for additional CT scans. Fly Thru and Smart Fusion are unique to Toshiba and not available at any other ultrasound vendor.

"From a clinician's standpoint, [Smart Fusion] is faster and it frees up their CT, making it available instead of using it for a biopsy," Plambeck said. "From a patient's standpoint, it's non-ionizing radiation, so they won't have to have a second dose of radiation to have a biopsy."

Toshiba's Reliance Program, a warranty/technology protection program, backs the new ultrasound systems.
