Siemens Healthineers has secured FDA clearance for its latest MR platform, the Magnetom Flow., a 1.5 tesla scanner designed with sustainability and workflow efficiency in mind.

The Erlangen, Germany-based company says the system is the first 1.5T MR with a 70cm bore to use its DryCool technology, requiring just 0.7 liters of liquid helium. Unlike traditional systems that can use more than 1,000 liters, the closed helium circuit eliminates the need for refills and removes the requirement for a quench pipe. That change, along with a compact system design, is expected to simplify installation and reduce infrastructure costs.

This is Siemens’ second 1.5T MR platform to adopt a near helium-free design, following the 60cm Magnetom Flow.Ace. It also builds on the company's experience with low-field systems like the 0.55T Magnetom Free.

According to Siemens, energy efficiency is another key feature. The platform can reduce annual energy use by up to 56% compared to previous Siemens MR models, aided by an Eco Power Mode that shuts down energy-intensive components when not in use.

Artificial intelligence plays a central role in automating workflow, with tools such as myExam Assist, myExam Autopilot, and the myExam Implant Suite helping to streamline scan setup and improve consistency. Deep Resolve 2D and 3D technologies support faster image acquisition with enhanced sharpness and noise reduction. The system also includes new cardiac workflows for simplified scan planning.

“The 70cm Magnetom Flow. platform is an intelligent magnetic resonance scanner that exceeds clinical expectations and simplifies workflows while doubling down on our commitment to sustainability in healthcare,” said Katie Grant, head of magnetic resonance at Siemens Healthineers North America.

The scanner supports a broad range of clinical applications and is compatible with high-density coils, including a new BioMatrix Contour XL for full-body coverage. An optional integrated wireless audio system in the head and neck coil is intended to improve patient comfort during exams.
