Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to be a driving force in mammography advancements and is of great interest to symplr provider customers. AI software improves early breast cancer detection by assisting radiologists in analyzing mammograms and identifying abnormalities. This is especially beneficial to high-risk patients, such as patients with dense breast tissue. Patients with dense breasts are 4-5 times more likely to develop breast cancer compared to patients with fatty breasts, but lesions are more difficult to identify in the early stages of breast cancer and software aid is needed. AI’s machine learning also allows for continued improvement as data sets increase with exams performed.

AI software is also proving beneficial in reducing burnout in radiologists. Long hours, inadequate staffing, high patient volumes, and complex cases can lead to radiologist burnout. AI provides radiologists with a consistently performing second set of eyes. AI assists in detecting abnormalities that a radiologist may miss due to fatigue or cognitive overload and decreases the mental strain of reading exams. Fewer missed findings lead to earlier diagnosis, timely treatment, and better outcomes for patients. Fewer false positives save resources on additional imaging and biopsies and reduce anxiety for patients.

symplr collects data from its 3,000+ provider customers, who have submitted their capital quotes for a custom price benchmarking analysis. symplr data reflects received executable quotes for mammography systems offered by Hologic, GE Healthcare, Fujifilm Healthcare, and Siemens Healthineers. In the last 12 months, symplr provider customers have shown the greatest interest in Hologic’s 3Dimensions and Selenia Dimensions 3D Performance systems, accounting for 84% of quotes, followed by GE’s Senographe Pristina, accounting for 14%. At least one AI software program is included in approximately one third of the quotes submitted to symplr for new mammography system purchases. Some providers are choosing to purchase AI software upgrades for already installed systems. symplr expects to see the prevalence of AI software to increase, as providers replace their older tomosynthesis systems and vendors continue to research and develop AI software solutions.

Hologic’s Genius AI Detection 2.0 software is a deep-learning program with high sensitivity and specificity, which can reduce false positive readings of breast cancer lesions by more than 70% when compared to their ImageChecker CAD platform. This solution is fully integrated with the Dimensions acquisition workstation. Genius AI is compatible with Quantra breast density assessment software, 3DQuorum SmartSlices, and 2D synthesizing software. High-risk cases identified by Genius AI are flagged for prioritized reading for the radiologist.
