The FDA has given Philips the nod to distribute its SmartSpeed AI-powered MR acceleration software in the U.S.

The clearance of SmartSpeed allows the company’s customers access to advanced AI data collection algorithms on its Compressed SENSE MR acceleration engine, with the new solution making scanning three times faster, without compromising image quality.

Additionally, SmartSpeed increases resolution up to 65% and supports 97% of current clinical protocols, including advanced contrasts, diffusion-weighted imaging, and quantitative brain, liver, heart and musculoskeletal scanning. This increases diagnostic confidence for even the most complex cases and enables scanning on virtually all patients, including those with motion and patient implants. The software is the first designed by Philips for facilitating AI-acceleration of quantitative MR.

“Philips’ AI-based SmartSpeed reconstruction is the new benchmark among acceleration techniques for us. It improves on the company’s existing Compressed SENSE in all aspects and allows a reduction in scan times with excellent image quality and diagnostic confidence,” said Dr. Grischa Bratke, radiologist and expert in musculoskeletal imaging at the University Hospital of Cologne in Germany, in a statement.

Using an AI reconstruction algorithm at the front-end of the MR signal, the solution removes noise and preserves details, while enabling a k-space data consistency check to ensure AI findings are accurate. The software’s deep learning technology is the company’s Adaptive C-SENSE-NET AI, which SmartSpeed seamlessly integrates with Philips Compressed-SENSE speed engine to create high-resolution images. It also facilitates high signal-to-noise ratio to create detailed scans, detect small lesions, and enhance diagnosis.

Philips SmartSpeed is the most recent addition to the company’s smart Philips MR portfolio and aligns with the Quadruple Aim of improving diagnostic outcomes, enhancing patient and staff experiences, and reducing cost overall.

It will be on display at the upcoming 2022 European Congress of Radiology.
