FDA gives green light to new United Imaging PET/MR scanner

The FDA has given United Imaging Healthcare the green light to begin the sale of its uPMR 790 HD TOF PET/MR system.

The approval of the scanner, which can scan an entire body within 20 minutes, comes just months after clearance of the company’s uEXPLORER total-body PET/CT scanner, which has the same capability, in January.

“As compared to PET/CT, certain conditions benefit from the simultaneous acquisition of MR. The uPMR790 shares the same digital PET technology as the uExplorer. Both systems have the same high-resolution crystals that differentiate all United Imaging PET products,” Jeffrey M. Bundy, CEO of UIH North America, told HCB News. “Now with the uPMR790, we add state-of-the-art, high-performance 3T MR, including high-density coils and uCS, United Imaging’s compressed sensing, to the largest PET FOV in a hybrid PET/MR system.”

The scanner offers high isotropic spatial resolution that enables clinicians to visualize small lesions, and accelerates acquisition times to provide patients with maximum comfort.

Based on digital silicon photomultipliers and lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate crystals, the platform offers 2.8 mm NEMA PET spatial resolution with time-of-flight technology and a large 32 cm axial field-of-view. When combined with compressed sensing for whole body isotropic 3D MR imaging, the technology can perform fast simultaneous whole-body PET and MR scans.

Made for the advancement of precision medicine in fields such as neurology, oncology and cardiology, uPMR 790 adds increased sensitivity, resolution and coverage that make it a strong asset in areas such as theranostics and neuroscience. It also offers additional opportunities for research in areas such as simultaneous tracking of PET and MR tracers, real-time cardiac PET/MR, functional neurological PET/MR, and multi-parametric radiometrics.

“Our approach is to incorporate the latest technology from each modality into all our hybrid systems,” said Bundy. “This combination brings the soft tissue contrast of MR together with functional PET information for staging, follow-up, and response assessment in cancer imaging and for applications in neuroscience.”

Based in Shanghai, United Imaging Healthcare made its U.S. debut this past November at the 2018 Radiological Society of North America conference in Chicago, where it announced the opening of its U.S. headquarters in Houston.
