Varex Imaging Corporation (Varex Imaging) has partnered with H+P Advanced Technology to establish a new company, VEC Imaging, dedicated to the development of carbon nanotubes.
The two announced the news at the 2019 European Congress of Radiology, and expect to further expand the applications of X-ray sources available to Varex Imaging, with manufacturing taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah.
“It’s a very specific technology to grow carbon nano profiles. It’s actually grown like a culture," Andrew Hartmann, senior vice president of medical global sales and marketing for Varex Imaging, told HCB News. "Building this company opens up the whole migration from two dimensional to tomosynthesis in 3D on a more dynamic scale. Basically, the nano tubes enables you to build an array of small emitters. Some of the initial products will be for mammography and mobile systems for tomosynthesis where we’re using in the range of 15-40 sources.”

Having signed their agreement this past December, the two expect the company to begin distributing products in the marketplace in the next two-to-three years, and are currently building prototypes and discussing what the company should focus on building as specific projects.
Customers will then have the opportunity to evaluate the prototypes and provide feedback to help VEC Imaging determine the next steps for further development of the products.
