Siemens Healthcare announced today that its Mammomat Fusion digital mammography system has received approval from the FDA. The system is designed for volume screening centers and small to medium-sized hospitals.

Mammomat Fusion has Siemens’ next generation cesium-iodide detector, which allows for more efficient use of the radiation dose. It produces high image quality at a dose that is at or below the range of other full-field digital mammography systems on the market.

The dose is even lower in cases when the patient’s breast is more than 50 millimeters thick. The system is fit for screening patients with various breast sizes since the system has a 23 by 30 cm image matrix.
It also features the OpDose feature that makes sure that the radiation dose is customized for each patient without interfering with the image quality. The technologist can choose the proper parameters based on the patient’s breast size and density.

The system’s Acquisition Workstation simplifies the procedure by loading the patient data directly from the radiology information system without requiring a second workstation. It also allows for automatic workflow so the system is ready for scanning with just one click.
