Yesterday, I received my new iPhone in the mail. I am a Verizon Wireless user and I ordered it so it would be delivered to me because there was no way I was going to go stand in line.

Some of you may have unlimited data accounts with Verizon. If you upgrade your phone to 4G, Verizon will not let you keep the unlimited data program but if you buy the phone, which I did, then you can keep your unlimited data program.

The new phone is noticeably lighter and noticeably thinner than the iPhone 4 or 4S. The screen is also bigger and allows you to have one extra row of apps on the home page.

There are also some cool little features.

You can take a panoramic picture that some of you may have seen on television.

In your email, you can select VIP people and you can click on your VIP icon and just see email from those people whom you consider to be VIPs (in my case, my wife and business partners).

I believe that the Apple maps are not as good as the Google maps but I am pretty sure that everyone is talking about that. I just created an icon for Google maps and I continue to use it.

Verizon does not allow you to browse and talk on the phone at the same time in the same way that AT&T does. But I have such a great deal with Verizon I could not move.

I can read DOTmed Business News on my phone now or on my iPad so that is one less thing I have to carry home. Just in case you are not already doing it, you may consider it.

Last but not least, I believe the battery is a little better, but I cannot tell until I have had the phone for a few days.

By the way, switching from my iPhone 4 to my iPhone 5 was a piece of cake. I backed up to iTunes and then followed the prompts to install the phone and restore all of my data from iTunes.

My lovely wife, Barbara, who is a longtime Blackberry user, is going to experiment with my iPhone 4. If she does not like it, she will go back to her Blackberry. If I see you at ASTRO or RSNA, I will let you know what happened.

I know that in 2013, we are going to be writing about some iPhone apps used in health care so be on the lookout for that.

(132) (6) (42) Don Bogutski Iphone 5 October 11, 2012 12:59 Like Phil I am a new owner of an IPHONE 5. I switched over from the RIM Blackberry on AT&T two weeks ago. After four Blackberry devices, my experience with the Torch was unacceptable and tech support from RIM was really poor too. As an IPAD and IPOD USER, The I5 has an immediate appeal. It takes a little getting use to, like holding down the #1 key to retrieve your voice mail, but it is fast and intuitive for most applications. The larger, brighter screen is very nice as well. My only concern is that with normal use the battery seems to be close to complete discharge in about 1/2 days use. I will be interested to learn Phil's experience and others with their IPHONE 5 battery capacity. Is the short battery life to be expected? Or, did I just get a defective battery in mine? Thanks. In common with Don, I too had a Blackberry but I was quite happy with it. Then one day my phone provider offered me this new Iphone 5 FOC and without hesitation I said YES PLEASE! It's better looking and has many more functions than my battered old telephone however on the things that count: reading emails and making a phone call the Blackberry just worked better......Battery lasts about a day, much like the Blackberry......
