An employee took home, or tried to take home, more than 1,300 private medical records from Loma Linda University Medical Center earlier this month, the hospital announced this week.

In a statement, the California health center said the records contained information related to 1,336 patients or guarantors, including birth dates, addresses and even some Social Security numbers. The employee, who was not named, has since been fired, the hospital said, although an investigation is still ongoing. The records, however, are back in the hospital's possession.

The 880-bed group said that after it learned of the breach, it notified the local sheriff's office, the state's public health department and affected patients. It also signed up with TransUnion to provide up to one year of credit monitoring for those whose records might have been taken.
