Health care added 31,000 jobs in July, more than a third of the 117,000 new jobs created in the private sector last month, according to Modern Healthcare, citing a new jobs report released Friday.

The total job growth number exceeded analysts' predictions -- CNN said economists it surveyed only expected 75,000 new jobs last month. But official unemployment remained stable, if slightly down, at 9.1 percent.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics report comes on the heels of a brutal day on Wall Street. On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average took its worst nose dive since 2008, obliterating gains for the year.

But health care appears still to be chugging along: hospitals and outpatient clinics each added 14,000 jobs, according to the BLS. Over the last year, health care employment added 299,000 jobs.

As of July, around 14.1 million Americans worked in health care, up slightly more than one-tenth of 1 percent from June. Of total health care workers, hospitals employ around 4.7 million.
