December 05, 2024
Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) has appointed Judy McLaughlin, DNP, MS, RN, as the new chief nursing officer. With over 25 years of distinguished health care experience, Dr. McLaughlin brings a wealth of knowledge in nursing leadership and operational expertise, further strengthening the hospital’s commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to the Staten Island community.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. McLaughlin to our leadership team - her strategic vision, extensive background in nursing and proven leadership in both clinical and operational settings will significantly contribute to SIUH’s continued success,” said Brahim Ardolic, MD, president of SIUH and deputy market president of Northwell’s Western Market. “We also extend our sincere gratitude to Kristen Rojas, RN, for her outstanding service as interim chief nursing officer during this period of transition.”

With deep family connections to the borough of Staten Island, Dr. McLaughlin joins SIUH after serving as senior vice president and chief nurse executive officer at the Brooklyn Hospital Center, a Mount Sinai affiliate. There, she held a range of senior leadership roles of progressive responsibilities. She was responsible for overseeing nursing practice across all inpatient and ambulatory care settings. Under her leadership, the hospital achieved significant improvements in patient outcomes, nurse-sensitive indicators and overall quality of care. Her ability to foster collaboration among interdisciplinary teams was instrumental in creating an environment of excellence in clinical care.

Throughout her career, Dr. McLaughlin has led numerous initiatives to improve clinical care, such as launching a nurse residency program, developing empathy training for nursing staff and applying Lean Six Sigma methods to streamline hospital operations. Her work at The Brooklyn Hospital Center led to higher Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems scores, which are patient ratings that show how satisfied people are with their hospital care, fewer pressure injuries and falls and international acclaim for the hospital’s DAISY Awards program, which celebrates outstanding nursing.

A recognized thought leader, she has presented nationwide on topics like empathetic communication and strategies for diabetes care. Her honors include the United Hospital Fund’s Tribute to Excellence in Quality Award and the American Cancer Society’s Leadership in Cancer Prevention and Screening Award.

“Dr. McLaughlin’s expertise in change management, collaboration, and quality improvement will be invaluable as we work to enhance patient care at SIUH,” added Meagan Sills, deputy hospital president at SIUH. “Her ability to inspire and lead a diverse team of health care professionals will advance our goals for nursing and patient services.”

Dr. McLaughlin holds a doctor of nursing practice degree from Capella University, a master of science degree in health services from Trident International University and bachelor of science degrees in both nursing and health services from SUNY Empire State College.
