To prevent these problems, Verghese advises radiologists to find more ways to communicate with patients directly, such as by showing and explaining to them what their scans entail, and to follow protocol and do what they say they do in computer logs for exams. He says to remember that not all things can be done remotely, such as working one-on-one with residents to pass on skills that will ensure quality care and satisfaction for the patient. In addition, he notes that challenges created by the amount of big data available and the challenges of technologies such as EMRs must be addressed to prevent residents and physicians from becoming disenchanted with their careers.
