Samsung's BodyTom Elite CT
Almost six years after the BodyTom CT scanner entered the market, Samsung today introduced an upgraded version called the BodyTom Elite.
The new premium full-body mobile CT scanner received FDA clearance on June 14. It features a new design and upgraded software, hardware and workstation.
Samsung CEO Philip Sullivan explained that it's been re-engineered so that it can easily be integrated into any operating room, neurosurgery, radiation oncology or radiology suite. It also generates a much sharper image than the previous generation.

The BodyTom Elite's new hardware features include linear and step calibration for axial and helical scanning, a tilt sensor that indicates if there are any significant shifts on the floor and a step correction feature to make automatic adjustments if there are slight movements.
It has a quieter lift system that reduces setup time, aligns with tables more easily and enables a quicker transition to scanning. It also has a new translate system that pushes the centipede belts to the floor, which reduces vibration and improves image accuracy.
The improvements made to the workstation include a two-way patient communication system, a better processing speed, more export options and a battery backup option.
One major new software upgrade is low-dose lung cancer screening under 3mGy to detect abnormalities. It also had metal artifact reduction, a new noise-reduction algorithm, contrast capability and automatic exposure control.
The BodyTom Elite is XR-29 compliant and is capable of dose structured reporting, CT dose check, AEC and pediatric and adult reference protocols.
John Muir Health in Walnut Creek, California runs a very busy imaging department and depends on its equipment to deliver the highest quality results, while keeping the patient comfortable.
"The Samsung BodyTom Elite does all the above and more, allowing for safe, precise and effective treatment," Michael Woodruff, director of medical imaging at the hospital, said in a statement.
