Your source for health care news

It's hard to believe this year is already over. Again, it's been busy and full of stories to report, particularly about health care reform. The Affordable Care Act hasn't even fully gone into effect but in so many ways, providers, companies and other stakeholders have already been adjusting to the changes.

As I reviewed the most read stories of the year, I saw that stories about health care reform have piqued your interest - as they should. On that list, there was a piece about how the Affordable Care Act might be indirectly affecting sales reps in the OR. It's commonplace for sales reps to support physicians using new medical devices, but it hasn't always been the most cost-effective way to go about things. Hospitals are experimenting with different approaches handling suppliers, while medical device companies are looking for new ways to do business too.

There was also a article about the expanding role of nurses under the law; a story about physicians distaste for cost-savings measures in payment reform as most would rather see that burden fall on insurance companies, device manufacturers and patients; and a story on lingering questions about the 2.3 percent medical device tax, which was included in the law to help offset the cost of reform.

You'll certainly see more stories like this in 2014 when things really ramp up concerning the law.

Besides health care reform stories, other top stories for 2013 had to do with troubling crimes and tragedy, including a piece about a patient at a VA medical center in New York City who was crushed to death when the apparatus on a 7-year-old GE gamma camera collapsed and crushed him.

On that note, I'm wishing everyone health and happiness in 2014!
