por Diana Bradley, Staff Writer | February 09, 2012
McKesson has acquired radiology workflow and communications solutions provider peerVue Inc. In a press release Wednesday, McKesson officials stated the move would extend the company's portfolio and address site-specific needs.

"peerVue brings world-class capabilities that facilitate care coordination, which is essential for better care and better business as part of our Better Health 2020 strategy," Kevan Torgerson, president, Enterprise Medical Imaging group, McKesson, said in a statement.

Via this strategy, McKesson plans to invest $1 billion in its technology businesses' research and development. Further to this, as health reform unfolds, the company aims to help health care organizations use IT strategically to enable better business, better care and better connectivity throughout the decade.

“There are a few key drivers to the acquisition,” Joe Biegel, vice president, product management and product marketing of Vancouver-based Enterprise Medical Imaging, McKesson Provider Technologies, told DOTmed News. “One of them is the growing importance in the diagnostic imaging market for solutions that can be applied to real world clinical problems that need a very flexible workflow solution to include communications issues, quality improvement initiatives and the general topic of collaboration. We have developed a very robust technology that allows the deployment of solutions that specifically aid customers in a very rapid fashion.”

With experience delivering solutions to some of the nation's top health care organizations, thousands of users depend of Sarasota, Fla.-based peerVue's technology to facilitate high quality, prompt care. Biegel believes that with peerVue, McKesson is well-positioned to help customers meet the growing number of initiatives and challenges to increase diagnostic imaging quality.

“While peerVue’s team has a strong focus in the radiology segment, we believe the core technology developed by the team could easily be applied into other clinical domains in the future and we are quite excited about the potential to build up solutions in some other domains closely related to radiology,” Biegel said.
