The chairman of the radiology department at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York was named president of the Radiological Society of North America.

Dr. Burton P. Drayer, a neuroradiologist and risk-management VP at the hospital, was named the president of the Board of the Directors for RSNA Thursday afternoon.

During the past year, he served as president-elect and secretary treasurer of the organization. Drayer has been on RSNA's board since 2003.

Dr. George S. Bisset III, the chief of pediatric radiology at Texas Children's Hospital and chair of the subject at Baylor College of Medicine, will now serve as treasurer and president elect, RSNA said. Bisset was RSNA chairman for the past year.

"My goals for 2011 are to enhance collaborations among radiology and non-radiology societies, as well as to extend the utilization and recognition of the RSNA's extensive technology platform," Drayer said in a statement.

Drayer's research focus has been on using CT and MRI scans to help diagnose and treat cerebral infarctions, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. He has helped write over 200 journal articles, 41 chapters and two books, RSNA said.

Drayer is a past president of the American Society of Neuroradiology, and has won several awards and recognitions, including from the ASNR and the American Board of Radiology. He has also been named "Best Doctor" by New York Magazine for a number of years running.

He received his medical degree from Chicago Medical School in 1971, and had residencies in neurology at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont and in diagnostic radiology at the University of Pittsburgh.
