Anyone who has strolled through Times Square recently has probably been dazzled by the American Eagle flagship store's 25-story-high LED screens. These wrap-around wonders were created by Barco, a Belgian display company that also applies their pixel-perfecting technology to medical imaging displays. At RSNA 2009, DOTmed News met with Barco to learn about their latest advances.

In the video (link below), Lynda Domogalla, director of marketing for medical displays, introduces Barco's RSNA debut, the Coronis Fusion 10MP. This 30-inch grayscale display offers 10 million megapixels of what the company calls "filmless perfection."

"[It's] really suited for showing a variety of medical images, including chest images, standard X-ray film and mammography," says Domogalla.

"You can just see a whole lot more detail and make a clinical decision much more quickly," she adds.

The Coronis Fusion 10MP, set to hit distributors early next year, bows alongside the Coronis 5MP Mammo, now available. The twin 5 million megapixel displays provide radiologists with greater diagnostic precision, according to the company. And thanks to its DuraLight backlight technology, it's supposed to have a longer shelf life, lasting three to five times longer than most LCD panels.

FIMI and the future

The week before RSNA opened, Barco announced it was buying FIMI, a Saronno, Italy-based display company, formerly a subsidiary of Philips.

Michael Sklar, vice president of medical imaging for Barco North America, believes the acquisition is just one of many indications that for Barco, 2009 was a good year. (In the video, he stands before two Barco screens showing a cataract surgery. Don't miss it.)

"The economic situation in health care is getting better, not just for Barco, but across the whole industry," he tells the DOTmed News team. "We've had good growth in 2009 in North America as well as on a global basis. We see that continuing in 2010."
