The FDA has given the nod to adding digital tomosynthesis as a functionality to Carestream's DRX-Evolution Plus System.
The upgradable option now enables users to capture data from a series of low-dose X-ray images for a faster imaging process with a simplified workflow and reduced exam time.
"Digital Tomosynthesis acquires a series of individual images from a range of different angles to provide depth information on the anatomy," Sarah Verna, worldwide marketing manager for global X-ray solutions at Carestream, told HCB News. "DT allows us to slice overlying pathology to help reveal underlying diseases."
The DRX-Evolution Plus System is designed to expedite complex medical imaging exams
, and consists of an extended tube column for greater flexibility in high-ceiling rooms, a high-performance generator, and an optional table to accommodate patients weighing up to 750 Ibs (320 kg). It also has forward-looking design specifications that enable the addition of new advanced imaging applications, such as DT functionality, as they become available.
Digital tomosynthesis builds upon this objective by increasing visibility to produce cross-sectional images of an organ, similar to that of computed tomography. The DT functionality for DRX-Evolution Plus uses a single sweep of X-ray exposures and streamlines operator workflow by separating the process of DT exposure acquisition from image volume formation. This allows for data to be generated from low dose X-ray images of the same organ, taken at the same X-ray exposure and from different angles.
Further enhancement is provided by Carestream’s ImageView Software, which is powered by the Eclipse image processing engine and made its debut on the market in May 2019
The addition of the DT functionality is expected to help hospitals and imaging centers to relieve the burden on their CT rooms, which are often overbooked with long waiting times, especially at trauma centers.
"DT increases visibility to help sharpen and aid diagnosis," said Verna, adding, however, that "it does not replace CT."
The DT functionality is now available as an option for users to purchase.
