Hospital for Special Surgery in New York announced plans on Thursday to open an ambulatory surgery center in Manhattan in June. HSS treats patients with orthopedic and rheumatologic issues.

"HSS is more than a hospital, and we're constantly working to identify new ways to make better quality care more accessible, through research, innovation and locations like this new ASC," Louis A. Shapiro, president and CEO of HSS, said in a statement.

The HSS ASC will perform hand, foot and ankle, and sports medicine surgeries. Dr. David S. Levin, foot and ankle surgeon at HSS, will be the center's medical director and Bryan Guss, previously from Northern Westchester Hospital, will be the senior director.

The ASC will be staffed with 10 sports medicine specialists, five foot and ankle surgeons and five hand and upper extremity surgeons from HSS. Anesthesiologists and nursing professionals will be on staff as well.

The center is 22,425 square feet, and located a short distance from the HSS main campus. It houses four operating rooms and a 16 bay pre- and post-surgical unit.

The HSS ASC of Manhattan will provide patients with another surgical location option, but ambulatory surgery cases will still be performed at the main campus as well.

More than 29,000 surgical procedures are performed at HSS annually. According to the hospital, it performs more hip and knee replacements than any other hospital in the country.
