Kodak 8000 panoramic X-ray tube head test.

August 31, 2013 09:48

Does anyone know if it's possible to energize the tube head without a computer and imaging software connected to the machine? The reason for doing this is for testing repaired tube heads. I have a machine, but no computer software or interface board. Most techs I've talked to have told me NO it's not possible to energize the tube head without the control software and computer, but I'm hoping there is some "secret" way of doing that, maybe by configuring jumpers on the CPU board or something to that effect. HELP!

Hi Stepan - No, the head does not leak, but that's the reason why I got this machine, is to TEST heads that I have repaired. I have repaired over 70 Kodak-8000 heads in the past two years, but I have no way to test them after being repaired. This machine came without a PC or software. That's why I am trying to energize the head without the software if possible. Have you had much success repairing the oil leak? I know that it must be done properly, otherwise it WILL leak again. You also need to add lost oil and place it under vacuum to remove air bubbles. Did you do that for the heads that you repaired? Just curious.

Thanks for your reply!

Hello Mike- I confirm that you need a computer with a PCI board inside and also the the software. This is because the control panel of the unit is the PC. In the tubehead testing process we made a dummy panoramic with most of the useful boards in order to energize the tubehead at different KV and mA values. The oil leaks are quite frequent in early models, the process was changed in order to overcome this fault. Once the tube is open, check under magnifying lens all solders of the small diodes of the rectifiers. Clean the old silicone and scratch the plastic cover under the sold silicone. You must try several kinds of silicone. It must resist to temperature, pressure and to oil. The oil is also special, High voltage insulating oil.
The oil and the head must be heated at 40°C to remove humidity. Make a plastic funnel to screw on the filling hole, then fill with oil until the funnel is half filled.
At this stage you must apply vacuum to the tubehead, the bubles come out and are replaced by the oil in the funnel.
When OK, close the tubehead. This method is used since long ago. Send me a message if you need a PCI board.
Regards

Hello Milad,

I received your Email and I already replied to it, but I will also reply here for the benefit of other technicians. All dental X-ray heads (also known as the X-ray generator) contain oil which is used as a heat sink and also as a high voltage insulator. You would not be able to do the repair yourself for a number of reasons. One is, you cannot purchase the special oil in small quantities. When I buy oil for X-ray heads, I buy it in 55 gallon drums. Also, After the seal has been repaired, I fill the head with new oil and then place the head under vacuum for at least 24 hours. That step is absolutely essential because new oil (or even used oil that has been exposed to the atmosphere) contains dissolved gas and moisture which must be removed. The process requires custom fittings that I had to make in order to degas the oil in the Kodak-8000/9000 heads.

The cost for me to repair the oil leak is a small fraction of the cost of a new tube head (generator). Thanks to Faustino Pereira (his comments above) I now have the ability to test the heads that I have repaired.

Contact me via Email if you have other questions.

Thanks!

Dear Mike,
We have to repair one of the X-Ray generator which used for Baggage Screening and it has a fault of oil leakage. We have located the place where oil is leaking, but we havn't repaired these kind of faults before. Can you advise me on the oil refilling process and after repair checking process for X-ray radiation emmission. generator operates a 140kV.
It would be a great help.

Hi Alex,
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.
Concerning the procedure for repairing the oil leak, it is quite involved and it has a lot of steps. The process took me many long, hard hours to learn and to do it correctly. Therefore I keep it to myself so as not to give any advantage to my competition. I would be happy to repair it for you, and the price is a small fraction of the cost that Carestream or other Kodak distributor would charge you for a new or refurbished head. My repair of the oil leak is so much better than the original manufacturer's seal, that it should never leak again during the life of the machine. Please Email me if you are interested in my services or if you have any other questions.

Thanks!
