The 2009 Conference on Materials and Processes for Medical Devices (MPMD), organized by ASM International, the materials information society, will be held August 10-12 in Minneapolis.

Experts from academia, industry, and national laboratories involved in cardiac, vascular, neurological and GI implants, as well as orthopaedic implants, dental devices and surgical instruments, will gather together to share their research.

Attendees will include: materials scientists, engineers, metallurgists, product designers, researchers and clinicians, says Jeremy Gilbert, Ph.D. of Syracuse University, and the chair of the MPMD organizing committee.

Materials covered include: biomedical alloys (stainless steels, Ti alloys, Co-Cr alloys, Ni-Ti alloys, noble and refractory metals), biopolymers, bioceramics, surface coatings, and nanomaterials.

Sri Sridhar, Distinguished Professor and Chair in the Physics Department at Northeastern University, will give the keynote address: "Nanoplatforms for Nanomedicine."

"A variety of nanoplatforms have emerged that have resulted in dramatic developments in imaging, early diagnosis and targeted delivery of therapeutics," he says.
