The department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has created a new office, the Office of Recovery Act Coordination. According to a press release from HHS, the new office will ensure the timely, organized and transparent distribution of the estimated $137 billion in Recovery Act Funds managed by the Department.

"HHS is committed to moving quickly and carefully to distribute Recovery Act funds in an open and transparent manner," said HHS Spokeswoman Jenny Backus. "We have already worked to put more than $3 billion in Recovery Act funds into states and the new Office of Recovery Act Coordination will enhance and streamline our efforts to get critical resources and potential new job opportunities to the American people during tough times."

The office will be led by HHS Deputy Assistant for Recovery Act Coordination Dennis Williams. Williams has served in HHS for more than 20 years in offices including the Health Resources Services Administration and the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Management and Budget. HHS says it has already distributed $3 billion in Recovery Act funds as of March 11, 2009, to support a variety of policies and programs including Community Health Centers and Medicaid.

Progress of HHS distribution activities can be monitored through the website www.hhs.gov/recovery/. On this website, a user can find information about patients helped, jobs created and grants for all the states. A user can also research grants and business opportunities available, and review weekly reports of HHS Recovery Act appropriations, obligations, and disbursements, along with activities and planned actions. A user can also read more about the programs being implemented with the funds: scientific research and facilities, community and family support centers, community health and health care assistance, and health IT.
