Capsule of Andover MA, a provider of medical device connectivity, has announced a partnership with Philips Healthcare to expand its reach into Europe, helping health organizations realize the clinical workflow benefits of medical device connectivity. According to a press release from Capsule the connectivity will enable all patient vital signs data from each device to be automatically sent into Philips' information system without clinicians having to manually chart.

By means of the Philips and Capsule partnership, hospitals can now connect virtually any bedside medical device to Philips IntelliVue Clinical Information Portfolio Critical Care (ICIP-CC) patient data management system. Devices connected can be Philips devices or non-Philips devices including patient monitors, ventilators, urimeters, balloon pumps, anesthesia machines, and IV pumps.

The first European implementation of Capsule's DataCaptor 5.0 device connectivity solution with Philips ICIP-CC system is at Hospital Sant Joan de Deu in Barcelona, Spain. According to the release, Sant Joan de Deu has connected devices including Maquet Servo ventilators, the Alaris Gateway, and Draeger Evita ventilators into Philips ICIP-CC in the ICU.

"Capsule is a very important international partner for Philips because it offers a proven, open architecture connectivity solution that provides integration between the many different medical devices our customers have into our ICIP-CC clinical information system," said Thomas Kerker, market development manager for Philips Healthcare. "Our customers can take advantage of the large library of medical devices Capsule can connect to and have the benefit of their guaranteed device driver updates. Furthermore, Capsule's solution will allow our customers to have the flexibility and scalability they need to add and change devices, as needed."

Siscu Torrents, Chief of the IT department, Hospital Sant Joan de Deu, Barcelona said, "We are very satisfied to go live with DataCaptor and the Philips ICIP-CC clinical information system...Having device connectivity to ICIP-CC allows our clinicians to spend more time one on one with critically ill patients instead of being tasked with manually charting and transcribing data from all of the devices into our clinical information system. We are focused on providing the best care for our patients, and having this whole process automated reassures us that the patient information is residing with complete accuracy in ICIP-CC."
