Olympus has completed the construction of its $45 million Westborough Massachusetts facility.

The 150,000 square foot location will support the processes of a global medical technology enterprise, including capturing cost savings and generating growth for the U.S. market for therapeutic medical devices used in endoscopic procedures — a strategic focus for the company.

The company kicked off the opening with a virtual celebration.

"Growth in the U.S. endoscopy market will be supported through our U.S. Sales and Marketing Surgical Business Units, which will continue to operate out of Westborough, along with other shared service functions. Additionally Therapeutic Solutions Division (TSD), focused on key areas of growth for Olympus such as GI-Endotherapy, Urology, and Respiratory, will operate globally out of this facility," Gabriela Kaynor, TSD global division co-head of Olympus Corporation of the Americas, told HCB News.

TSD headquarters were also shifted from Tokyo to the U.S. to give the company better access and opportunities.

Olympus Westborough is expected to support partnerships with universities, colleges and technical schools in the greater Boston area. In addition, Olympus plans to expand its corporate social responsibility partnerships throughout the area. It will offer hands-on learning training through its Olympus Continuum Training and Education Center, where top medical experts will teach physicians, nurses, technicians and biomeds how to use advanced equipment, both in person and virtually, through the MedPresence telecollaboration platform, in a state-of-the-art wetlab setting.

The MedPresence platform will also be used to create immersive environments in the Olympus OR Innovation Center showroom for in-person and virtual integrated OR demonstrations. The location will also be equipped to facilitate connections among global stakeholders and consumers through enhanced technology and medical R&D innovations.

Employees formerly working at the Southborough and Littleton facilities will now work at Olympus Westborough over the next several months. Manufacturing operations for the Olympus Customer Solutions Group will remain at Littleton. Olympus expects to add more jobs as the economy improves and is now hiring for some specialized positioning. Space utilization and automated amenities are integrated within the building’s design for COVID-19 precautions.

"With this new facility, we are consolidating the business management, TSD Global functions and shared services, R&D, manufacturing, and sales/marketing functions that had previously been in Southborough; with the sales/marketing and R&D functions in Littleton, formerly belonging to Image Stream Medical, aiming for more agile business operations," said Kaynor.
