Johnson & Johnson slammed with $572 million opioid ruling

by Thomas Dworetzky, Contributing Reporter | August 27, 2019

Other key opioid purveyors, Purdue Pharma and Teva Pharmaceutical had settled with the state before trial, without admitting guilt.

The opioid litigation wave is just beginning, and the ruling will doubtless have a significant impact going forward.

Legal analysts, noted CNBC, saw the trial as a test for the approximately 1,900 cases now in the pipeline against Purdue Pharma, J&J and other opioid manufacturers, which have been consolidated and moved to a Northern District of Ohio judge.

Considering how many individuals began their journey to addiction with prescribed medication, one way to combat the opioid crisis could be with a new EMR feature, according to a 2018 Penn Medicine study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

It's a default option for a lower quantity of tablets in the EMR discharge orders.

"For EDs in which there is wide variation in how many tablets are being prescribed, this would be a pretty simple tweak that could be implemented to make prescriptions consistent with guidelines from the American College of Emergency Physicians and other bodies," M. Kit Delgado, lead author, told HCB News at the time.

"The best way to prevent drug addiction and overdose is to prevent people from abusing drugs in the first place," he said in a statement. "If they don't start, they won't have a problem."
