State Of The Union and healthcare

by Philip F. Jacobus, CEO | February 06, 2019
I have to believe that everyone reading this blog also listened to the State Of The Union speech last night. I know that all of us are impressed by politicians applauding each other but anyway, I can tell you that I am actually a little bit disappointed that more attention was not given to healthcare.

President Trump did point out that he eliminated the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act. He talked about HIV, abortion, price transparency and a pediatric cancer initiative. All of these are important topics but I have read so many polls and heard so many people say they're worried for the future of healthcare in the United States and I think he missed the overall gravity of those concerns.

In my view, healthcare is one of the biggest problems that we face in this country and for that matter, the world. You may have heard me say in the past that there are more people alive today and we succeeded in making people live longer. There is increased demand on hospitals, in the emergency room and even in urgent care centers.

Physicians are encouraged to spend less time with patients and more treatments are being assigned to non-physician technicians.

Technology is improving and treatment options are improving and diagnostic tools are improving. But technology alone is not the answer.

Prices continue to rise. It doesn't seem to me that our president and congressional leaders are focusing on the right issues. What is the path forward from here?

I still say, if you ask the average American over 40, what is their biggest concern right now, it will be healthcare. I hope our leaders do something about it.
