The FDA has cleared the Siemens Healthineers new PET/CT system, Biograph Vision.

“The Biograph Vision represents a major leap in performance beyond any PET/CT system previously manufactured,” said Jim Williams, Ph.D., head of Siemens Healthineers Molecular Imaging, in a statement. “With this system, we extend the boundaries of PET imaging and help our customers explore a new frontier in precision medicine.”

It comes with a number of new features, including Optiso Ultra Dynamic Range (UDR) Detector Technology, which makes use of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) instead of industry standard photomultiplier tubes.

This has led to higher spatial resolution as the detector’s lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO) crystal elements can be reduced from 4 x 4 mm to 3.2 x 3.2 mm.

The combination of the small LSO crystals and 100 percent coverage of the scintillator array with SiPMs enables delivery of industry leading time-of-flight, with 249 picosecond temporal resolution, and an effective sensitivity at 84 cps/kBq.

Combined, these features let Biograph Vision cut scan time by a factor of 3.9. This boosts throughput – and cuts tracer costs and radiation exposure to the patient.

The Biograph Vision also features a big 78 cm bore, with 24 percent more space than a 70 cm, which can help with calming patient anxiety and easier positioning for both radiotherapy devices and bariatric patients.

The system will fit into any existing Biograph mCT family scanner space without major rehab.

To further improve patient care, the system comes with the FlowMotion Multiparametric Suite, an automated solution for whole-body parametric PET exams, able to supply metabolic glucose rates and distribution volume as well as standard uptake volume, improving the ability to distinguish between non-metabolized and metabolized fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) in a patient.

Additionally, OncoFreeze and CardioFreeze help yield motion-free PET/CT images in the same time as a regular whole-body scan. This helps make lesions easier to spot, delineate and quantify.
