CHICAGO – Siemens Healthineers tore the white sheets off four new CT systems at the RSNA annual meeting on Sunday.

The company introduced two new additions to its SOMATOM go. platform and a couple of premium systems equipped with an AI-based 3-D camera for patient positioning.

“The 3-D camera works like a satellite,” Eberhard ten Weges, vice president of global sales for CT at Siemens, told HCB News. “Its deep learning algorithms can recognize [the patient’s] body contour, height and body regions.”
He added that 95 percent of patient positioning is incorrect when it pertains to isocenter positioning. That results in an 18 percent higher dose and a 6 percent increase in image noise.

The SOMATOM Edge Plus is Siemens’ new premium single-source system and the SOMATOM Force is the new dual-source system equipped with two X-ray tubes and two detectors. These systems enable clinicians to perform all CT applications regardless of patient or clinical issue.

Both feature the Stellar Infinity detector, which is ideal for imaging obese patients due to its ability to generate sharp, contrast-rich images. The Edge Plus comes with TwinBeam Dual Energy scan modes and the Tin Filter technology that enables scans at very low doses by shielding patients from unnecessary radiation.

Customers with existing SOMATOM Force and SOMATOM Drive CT systems have the option of retrofitting their systems with the new 3-D camera that’s fitted above the patient table.

The new SOMATOM go.All and SOMATOM go.Top expand mobile workflow capabilities into advanced clinical fields such as cardiology and CT-guided intervention. This workflow is operated by a tablet and remote, and allows the technologists to remain closer to the patient during exam preparation and the actual scan, which is especially important for pediatric patients.

All four of the new CT systems are still 510(k) pending and not for sale in the U.S., but Siemens expects approval in spring.
