The evolution of imaging technologies

December 01, 2017
From the November 2017 issue of HealthCare Business News magazine

We’re already seeing the rewards of hybrid imaging technology coming to life:

• CARTI Cancer Center has integrated the interventional lab and CT scanner with Toshiba Medical’s Infinix 4D CT to streamline workflow, eliminating the need to transfer patients between departments and maintaining patient safety while decreasing procedure time.

• Moffitt Cancer Center is using Infinix 4D CT technology to capture high-quality images more quickly without having to transfer patients between machines. This optimized workflow has allowed them to double their embolization caseload and significantly reduce wait times for ablations and biopsies.

As medical imaging technology continues to evolve, we must consider the evolution of security needs as well. Today’s updated systems produce more data, which creates more opportunities for vulnerability and demands we take steps to reduce risks of cyberattack.

The first key in cybersecurity is partnering with an imaging vendor that prioritizes the protection of patient health information and fights against malware and other malicious software with constant system updates to ensure maximum safety.

Looking ahead, I see an exciting future for medical imaging. The day when imaging technology will be available directly to consumers is not far off. I envision simple imaging tools that will enable consumers to personally upload and share preliminary images with a doctor — potentially supported by artificial intelligence technology.

Just as diagnostic imaging has evolved over the past 100 years, it will continue to evolve even more rapidly for the next 100. While we may be in the midst of an uncertain health care environment, I’m certain about and excited for the positive, innovative future of medical imaging.
