Physicians are increasingly searching for low-dose screening options, but oftentimes that means sacrificing clinical performance. Such is not the case with Hologic’s Low Dose 3D MAMMOGRAPHY exams with C-View software, according to a recent study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania and published in Radiology.

The software eliminates the need for additional exposures because a 2-D image is generated using the tomosynthesis data that’s acquired during that mammography exam. As a result, less radiation is administered to the patients and the compression time is reduced.

The researchers from the university compared radiation dose, recall, biopsy and cancer detection rates for 15,571 women who received a traditional Genius digital mammography/digital breast tomosynthesis exam and 5,366 women who were screened using the software.

They found that both screening methods had comparable performance, but that the radiation dose administered to the patient was reduced by 39 percent with the use of the software. In addition, it increased the probably of a patient’s biopsy spotting cancer, compared with traditional Genius exams.

A European study with similar findings was published in Lancet Oncology, but this was the first major U.S. study that compared the performance of Low Dose 3D MAMMOGRAPHY exams with traditional Genius exams.

The Low Dose 3D MAMMOGRAPHY exam with C-View software has FDA approval, CE mark and is commercially available in the U.S. and Europe. It’s only available on the Hologic Selenia Dimensions system.
