Royal Philips announced today that Dr. Jan Kimpen will become chief medical officer of the company on January 1, 2016. Kimpen was previously the chairman of the executive board at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht) in the Netherlands.

“I am excited about the next chapter of my professional life,” Kimpen told HCB News. “I look forward to connecting with Philips' various businesses, markets and functions, as well as the relevant stakeholders in the health care industry, and help drive the company's clinical innovation strategy.”

Philips believes that Kimpen will help the company grow in the HealthTech market. He will work with Philips’ global network of medical thought leaders to make sure that the company’s propositions revolve around patient-centered care and clinical insight.

Kimpen joined UMC Utrecht in 1997 and later became the president of the board in 2009. In his role, he strengthened connections with the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital and the Netherlands Pediatric Oncology Center, and was behind the partnerships with Philips and Eidenhoven University of Technology.

Kimpen believes that collaboration is crucial to fostering innovation in health care. With his experiences in fostering partnerships in the public health care sector, he is confident that he can provide a strong foundation to broaden Philips’ cooperation agreements with a variety of public and private stakeholders in the industry.
