The New York Times reported last month the death of two medical pioneers.

Dr. Forrest M. Bird, who died at the age of 94, developed "four generations of cardiopulmonary devices that came to be widely used in homes and hospitals," according to the Times.

The newspaper reported that in the 1950s and '60s, Bird "pioneered some of the first portable and reliable mechanical ventilators" for those suffering from chronic and acute heart and lung afflictions.

The newspaper also reported the death of Dr. Louis Sokoloff, who died at the age of 93.

The Times said he "pioneered the PET scan technique for measuring human brain function and diagnosing disorders."
