A definitive agreement has been signed for Richardson Electronics Healthcare to acquire South Carolina-based parts and service provider, International Medical Equipment and Service, Inc (IMES).

While IMES will bring new strength to the table in a segment where Richardson already thrives — high-value components and replacement parts in the diagnostic imaging marketplace — it will in turn enjoy the security, resources, and global reach that Richardson will provide.

Patrick Fitzgerald, vice president and general manager for Richardson Healthcare, told DOTmed News that the IMES focus on underserved diagnostic imaging equipment brands contributed to the corporate synergy, and complements a Richardson Healthcare business strategy that has already made significant progress since its inception last year.

"At this point, all of the core elements of Richardson Healthcare are now in place or under development," said Fitzgerald. "We are able to offer our customers high-value components like diagnostic imaging displays for PACS, wireless DR upgrades, as well as replacement diagnostic imaging parts, CT tubes and training."

The company currently has legal entities in 25 countries and sales offices in 40 countries, according to Fitzgerald, who said that footprint enables a faster and more efficient supply chain.

That global presence will benefit the team from IMES, which will remain intact under the new umbrella. Fitzgerald said that ensuring Trey McIntyre, president of IMES, remained in charge of his team was something both companies considered crucial to the transaction.

"Richardson Healthcare is building an incredible team packed with expertise and experience; the team is a natural fit with out own dedicated staff," said McIntyre in a statement. "We are excited because we know that with the expanded reach and new capabilities Richardson provides, we can better serve our customers."

Fitzgerald echoed that sentiment on behalf of Richardson, "One of the things that makes this acquisition a bit unique, compared to many recent deals in the alternative parts and service space, is how important the people and the cultural fit were to both companies."

The financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.
