STERIS offers first-ever media tour of new facility

by Sean Ruck, Contributing Editor | April 25, 2013
On April 18, STERIS Corporation, an infection prevention and surgical products and services company, opened the doors of its Mentor, Ohio headquarters addition to the media for the first time. The building, completed in 2011, has served as a customer magnet, attracting STERIS clients from far and wide and serving as the host of more than 500 tours.

The building offers a mix of history and high-tech. Visitors walk into what's essentially a company museum, with some very early examples of steam sterilizers on display along with a company hall of fame — both for inventors and patent holders, as well as individuals who've been honored for their longevity working for the company.

A tour of the facility introduced those in attendance to key products already in the market as well as the miniature model of the brand new OT 1000 Series Orthopedic Surgical Table. The tour also included a stop in a sterile OR suite, complete with operating tables, ceiling-mounted high-definition surgical
video cameras and more.

Media were briefed in a well-appointed boardroom complete with large smart boards that helped to facilitate the presentation about the company's past, present and future.

With the headquarters and the campus it sits on, the large warehouse a little further down the road and the acquisition of literal next-door neighbor U.S. Endoscopy in 2012, STERIS' footprint in Mentor is huge. But it's not just the physical space — the economic strength the company brings to the table is significant as well. Although STERIS employs more than 5,000 people worldwide, many work in Mentor.

"STERIS is probably the second largest employer in Mentor after the government," said Tim Chapman, Healthcare Group President at STERIS.
